Paul Voß sixth in West Flanders
Ichtegem : 07/03/2010
MILRAM's Paul Voß brought in another Top Ten finish in the final stage of the „Three Days of West Flanders“ (March 5-7 / UCI 2.1). The 23-year-old fought for every second for the overall ranking on the third day of the Belgian stage race, and ended up sixth. The stage win went to Kris Boeckmans (Topsport Vlaanderen). The Belgian beat Yohann Gene (Bbox Bouygues) in the mass sprint after 194.5 kilometers from Middelkerke to Ichegem. For Boeckman's fellow landsman Jens Keukeleire (Cofidis), third place was enough after a total of 554.6 km to claim the overall title of the „Three Days of West Flanders.“
„Paul Voß took on the challenge and even won the mountain ranking on Kemmelberg, which brought him three seconds for the overall ranking,“ said Jochen Hahn, Directeur Sportif of Team MILRAM. „Unfortunately he was blocked in the sprint, otherwise he might have done even better. At any rate, we can be satisfied with his Top Ten placings both in the stage and the overall.“
Right at the start of the final stage of the „Three Days of West Flanders,“ MILRAM's Matthias Ruß was in a five-man escape group. This break was quickly caught by the peloton. Directly thereafter a six-man group launched a successful counterattack. The sextet quickly got away from the peloton and had a promising led of up to four minutes. With 80 km to go, teams Skil-Shimano and Cofidis started the chase.
The lead group defended its lead doggedly and was even able to build its lead up from 30 to 40 seconds with 30 km to go. But their hopes were soon dashed. Shortly before the second of four times across the finish line, with only 20 km to go, the lead was down to 16 seconds, which indicated that a mass sprint would ensue. Eight km before the finish, the escape was over, setting up the sprint.
